New Administration Orders AI Policy Plan

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Trump administration’s revocation of Biden’s executive order on AI development. Now the new administration has issued its own executive order which outlines a timeline for further policy developments. A recent memo from Davis Polk outlines the contents of the order:
“Among other things, President Trump’s AI executive order directs White House staff, including the Special Advisor for AI and Crypto, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST), and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (APNSA), in coordination with relevant agencies, to (i) develop an AI action plan within 180 days to achieve the U.S. policy goal; and (ii) identify all actions taken pursuant to the revoked EO 14110 that may be inconsistent with, or present obstacles to, the policy goal, and to suspend, revise, or rescind such actions, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law.”
There are a lot of questions about how the Trump administration will handle AI. Will it be a completely hands-off approach? Or might we see policies to advance U.S. AI development and hamper AI development from competing global powers? The executive order doesn’t give much insight into the administration’s plans for AI policy, but when the AI policy plan is promulgated in six months, we’ll have a better idea of their vision.
